When I joined the fire service I attended a few LP classes and found myself concerned with the lack of safeties that had been incorporated in the systems. Live fire training does not mean that you MUST take chances. The biggest issue that I had was the lack of a manual/quick acting EMERGENCY shut off valves. When something goes wrong, you shouldn’t have to wait on the system to bleed down for the fire to go away.

The best course that I had attended by far was taught by Ranger Insurance. But, early on they stopped providing this valuable service. When I heard that they had, I contacted them for verification. I was advised that it was true, the representative said that he had heard of my course and if it was all right with me, they would like to point potential customers in our direction. Not a bad endorsement from the largest LP training program for years and years. I was and am very honored.

With several years already in the propane industry repairing and building bulk trucks and LP systems for Paul Akers, Inc., I decided to build a system of my own. I wanted my systems to include emergency shutoffs that were manned during every evolution (no electronics to fail). Our LP tank has been constructed to contain water in the tank, this alleviates the possibility of a BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion). So with support from Hanna Hose Reels (http://www.hannay.com/) and several others I built the system which includes the 500 gallon tank and Christmas tree that we use today. They have seen fire after fire since 1990 and are ready for more.
