Presented by Responder Training Enterprises and AFV HAZCON

Date: June 25th–27th
Time: 08:00 – 16:00
Location: 710 Main Street, Shirley, IN 47384
Cost: $500.00

Course Overview

This hands-on training is designed to improve responder decision-making, product understanding, tactical operations, and real-world troubleshooting for propane and alternative fuel systems.

The course combines classroom instruction, practical field evolutions, and shop-based component familiarization to help attendees better understand system behavior, incident considerations, and effective response tactics.

Day 1

The first day will consist of the Propane Response – 101 to Advanced Tactics class where students will dive into the physical and chemical properties of propane and how those properties affect response. Students will also review tactical decision-making, past event lessons, physical display props, and product demonstrations.

Topics Include

  • Propane behavior, pressure management, and temperature control
  • When to, and when not to, roll a tank to control venting
  • Flaring liquid vs. vapor
  • Plumbing and piping systems, tank options, attachment points, and valving
  • Water injection, vehicle orientation, and pressure gauge verification

Day 1 Practical (After Lunch)

  • Safety briefing
  • Multiple flare setup and operations
  • 20 lb. forklift cylinder and 100 lb. tank operations
  • Vehicle and tank assessment
  • Condition, orientation, volume, pressure, issues, and dangers
  • Tactical response considerations
  • Leak conversion
  • Leak management including trapped liquid and valve activation
  • Residential tank with multivalve
  • Underground tank operations
  • Flaring operations
  • Water injection
  • Open discussion
To participate in the water injection portion, full structural PPE including SCBA is required.

Day 2: Hands-On in “The Shop”

On day 2, students will interact with multiple types of system components to deepen real-world understanding and improve troubleshooting effectiveness.

  • Swap out liquid and vapor valves on live tanks and cylinders
  • Disassemble assorted system components to understand how they function
  • Work with tools commonly used in the propane service industry
  • Learn why some tools and procedures work one way and not another
  • Additional hands-on practical instruction

Bonus Instruction

Additional content includes AFV Systems and Mechanics Familiarization for NG, LNG, and H2 systems.

Why Attend This Course?

This program is designed and led by an SME with 14 years in the propane service industry. It emphasizes not only how systems work, but also which components may be present and how to manage them effectively.

  • Improves system recognition and tactical decision-making
  • Helps reduce on-scene time through better component identification
  • Provides practical crossover for industrial, commercial, residential, and mobile equipment applications
  • Delivers direct hands-on experience, not just classroom theory
